The event at the Landmark Theater was co-sponsored by Syracuse U. because the pic's subject, Ernie Davis, was a running back there. Davis was the first black player to win the Heisman Trophy. Many of the film's scenes were shot at the upstate New York campus.
That tie-in gave the event a shot of orange-and-blue college pride, as the school's marching band welcomed stars Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown, NBC U prexy Jeff Zucker and guest Bob Costas.
Quaid later showcased his musical chops by hopping on stage and jamming with the house band, as his co-stars cheered.
"This premiere could not have been held anywhere else," said helmer Gary Fleder. "We wanted to honor the school and his legacy."
