Ignition will air Saturdays and Sundays on DStv 412, which during the week is used by BDFM Media's business channel Summit TV.
Ignition is the third TV brand to be launched by BDFM, the media company that also publishes leading local financial publications Business Day and Financial Mail.
Both Ignition and the Home Channel, launched in 2005, started out as niche programming slots on Summit TV before expanding into full-fledged channels.
"It's unbelievable that in this car-mad country of ours there's no motoring TV channel. It's such an obvious gap -- you've got a combination of powerful content, deep-rooted brands and great commercial opportunities," said Vernon Matzopoulos, managing director of Summit and the Home Channel.
Matzopoulos said Ignition would be fronted by popular TV presenter and self-described auto fanatic Marius Roberts, with the production team including seasoned motoring producer and racer Lindsay Vine.
Ignition has signed a deal with international motoring TV experts Auto Mundial to keep up to speed with international news, launches and events, Matzopoulos said. It also has secured the rights to top-rated international motoring shows like "Great Cars" and "Tuning Mania."
