Monroe started his career as an agent, working with clients including Sammy Davis Jr., Harry Belafonte, Peggy Lee and Nat "King" Cole. He then began studying acting with Lee Strasberg and appeared in several plays.
As an associate producer for Spelling-Goldberg, he oversaw production and post-production on numerous TV movies.
After reading about a colorful detective in Al Martinez's L.A. Times column, Monroe and his producing partner Everett Chambers turned the story into a TV movie, "Jigsaw John," which also became a TV series. The duo also produced TV movies "The Great American Beauty Contest" and "Can Ellen Be Saved."
After working as an agent, actor and producer, Monroe became an acting teacher, holding weekly classes.
He is survived by a sister.
