The fest said that the award recognizes Hauer’s artistic achievement and his commitment to encouraging young filmmakers through initiatives such as the Rutger Hauer Film Factory.
Dutch director-producer George Sluizer will deliver the fest’s Variety Militans lecture on Sept. 27.
Best known for 1988 thriller “Spoorloos,” which he remade in the States as “The Vanishing” in 1992, Sluizer will speak on the lecture’s regular topic -- the viability of cinema, as discussed by Dutch film theoretician Menno ter Braak in his 1926 essay Cinema Militans.
This is the eighth year Variety has sponsored the lecture. Past speakers include Marc Rothemund, Marion Hansel and Istvan Szabo.
