Urbanworld, the biggest movie event devoted to minority fare, has also picked up the world premiere of the first two episodes of Cinemax's forthcoming erotic drama series "Zane's Sex Chronicles," based on the bestselling books.
Urbanworld founder Stacy Spikes said that the fest, which runs through Sept. 14, will screen a record 85 movies, most of them on three screens at the AMC Loews 34th Street theaters.
Following the screening of "Still Trippin,' " Jeff Clanagan, head of Codeblack Entertainment, the producer and distributor of the concert film, said he'll open the movie in limited release in eight cities in October before funneling the DVD to vidstores on Oct. 28.
Clanagan said he engineered the same distribution pattern for Harvey's previous standup movie, "Don't Trip: He Ain't Through With Me Yet," which grossed $311,000 on 50 screens in eight cities when Codeblack released it in 2006. The company went on to sell 500,000 copies of "Don't Trip" on DVD, Clanagan said.
"Zane's Sex Chronicles," whose exec producers are Zane (one name only) and Suzanne de Passe, kicks off on Cinemax Oct. 10 with a one-hour premiere, following by 12 half-hours on subsequent Fridays through December.
HBO is the founding sponsor of Urbanworld, and BET is presenting sponsor.
