Armella, a former collaborator of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu whose previous credits include docu "Toro negro," scooped the Lido nod for telling a powerful story about misery and solitude "in a few minutes using a single location," according to the jury.
A special mention went to Magyar helmer Karchi Perlmann for "The Dinner" set against a backdrop of political turmoil in Hungary.
The Prix UIP for European short went to Belgian helmer Koen Dejaegher's "The Altruists" for depicting in a "clear and unusual way an absurd situation which reveals the impact of the economy on interpersonal relationships within European society."
The Corto Cortissimo jury was headed by cult U.S. filmmaker Amos Poe.
The Venice fest's main prizes will be announced Saturday during the closing ceremony.
