Germany unveils Oscar contenders

'Baader,' 'Wave,' 'Blossoms' on shortlist

BERLIN — Uli Edel’s terrorist drama “The Baader Meinhof Complex,” Dennis Gansel’s box office hit “The Wave” and Doris Doerrie’s “Cherry Blossoms” have made the short list to compete as Germany’s candidate for the foreign-language film Oscar.

Also nominated are Tom Schreiber’s "Dr. Aleman,” about a young German doctor working in Colombia, and Andreas Dresen’s love story "Cloud 9.”

Promotional org German Films will announce Germany’s candidate on Sept. 16 after its selection by a nine-member independent jury.

The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences will announce its nominees for foreign-language film on Jan. 22. The Academy Awards ceremony takes place Feb. 22.
