"Skellig," helmed by Annabel Jankel and based on David Almond's hit tyke novel, also stars Kelly MacDonald, Bill Milner ("Rambow") and John Simm ("Life on Mars").
Set in the North of England, the film recounts the story of a boy (Milner) who finds the mystical Skellig -- part owl, part angel -- living in the garage of his new home.
MacDonald and Simm play the boy's parents.
The film began principal photography in Cardiff, Wales, on Tuesday.
Pic is being made by the Feel Films and Taking a Line for a Walk Prods. in association with the Wales Creative IP Fund and Limelight, and was commissioned by Sky One's Sarah Conroy.
It will be executive produced by Conroy and Elaine Pyke for Sky, Linda James from the Wales Creative IP Fund and Michael Henry from Limelight. It will be produced by Nick Hirshkom.
It is the first project financed by Sky One's HD drama investment fund, which is worth in excess of £10 million ($17.8 million).
Pic is a further sign of satcaster BSkyB's renewed interest in original content. Sky mothballed its feature arm, Sky Pictures, in 2001, but Sky One topper Richard Woolfe is making new investments in drama.
