Netherlands selects Oscar entry

'Dunya' submitted for foreign language award

Helmer Dana Nechushtan's "Dunya & Desie" is the Netherlands' entry for the foreign language Oscar.

Pic is about inseparable 18-year-old girlfriends, one Dutch, one Moroccan, forced to make an important choice on a road trip through Morocco.

The screenplay is by Robert Alberdingk Thijm and is based on the popular TV series about the girls, which he also wrote.

"Dunya & Desie" is produced by Lemming Film, NPS/A Private View and Belgium's Motion Investment Group.

International sales are by Delphis Films, Canada.

Starring Eva van de Wijdeven and Maryam Hassouni, pic premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February and has played a slew of fests including Karlovy Vary, Sarajevo and Montreal.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has invited 96 countries to submit films for foreign-language Oscar consideration. Deadline for submission is Oct. 1, the nominations will be announced Jan. 22, and the award ceremony takes place on Feb. 22.
