As tourist auds began to dry up, total sales fell nearly $1.3 million to $17.3 million for 25 shows reporting. Cume was further diminished by the absence of "A Chorus Line" and "Thurgood," which both shuttered after the previous frame.
Almost every production on the boards posted a loss compared with the previous week -- all except for "Cirque Dreams Jungle Fantasy" ($576,325), up around $45,000 in the final week of its limited engagement, and strong-selling play revival "Boeing-Boeing" ($425,248), which rose slightly.
Usual top 10 suspects, such as "Wicked" ($1,511,914) and "The Lion King" ($1,320,247), remained largely unfazed. Summer-pic source material "Mamma Mia!" ($1,030,678) held onto its spot in the millionaires club, although the year's top Tony tuner "In the Heights" ($948,811) slipped below the million mark for the first time in several weeks.
"Legally Blonde" ($703,931), off by more than $115,000, saw the largest drop of the week in what may be the first indicator that the biz driven by the recent "Blonde" casting skein on MTV may have reached its limit. Estimates for "Young Frankenstein" fell more than $100,000 to around $680,000.
"Monty Python's Spamalot" ($515,896) slid nearly that much, and "Mary Poppins" ($877,442), "Gypsy" ($658,330) and "Grease" ($625,927) also experienced dips in the high five-figure range. The only tuner to open this summer, "[title of show]" ($149,211), slipped a bit in its struggle to build momentum.
Meanwhile, "A Tale of Two Cities" ($364,207) joined the Rialto fray, playing to 71% capacity auds over a six-preview week.
The 22 musicals grossed $16,149,601 for 93.1% of the Broadway total, with an attendance of 199,619 at 85.1% capacity and average paid admission of $80.90.
The four plays grossed $1,195,040 for 6.9% of the Broadway total, with an attendance of 17,245 at 75.8% capacity and average paid admission of $69.30.
Average paid admission was $79.98 for all shows.
