'Our House' addresses SA shortage

Show covers building of 200 Cape Town homes

JOHANNESBURG A serious housing shortage in South Africa, where more than 10 years after the end of apartheid many millions of people still do not have adequate permanent homes, is the focus of a new reality show, "Our House."

The skein, which pubcaster South African Broadcasting Corp. started airing Aug. 29, revolves around the building of 200 houses in seven days in Freedom Park, Cape Town. It is part of a community "build your own home" project supported by Irish volunteers from the Niall Mellon Foundation, the Development Bank of Southern Africa and the Cape Town.

In the series of 13 episodes, four teams consisting of Irish volunteers and eight Freedom Park families, compete to build eight of the 200 houses the fastest and the best, with the two families "winning" the houses they have built fully furnished and equipped.

Production was by Cape Town-based production companies ZenHQ and Binary Film Works.
