Maya to release 'Fraude'

Film unit sets date for documentary

Los Angeles-based Maya Entertainment will release Luis Mandoki's documentary "Fraude Mexico 2006" in the U.S. on Oct. 10, starting with Los Angeles, Denver and Phoenix.

Docu tracks the most closely contested elections in Mexican history, which brought President Felipe Calderon to power amid accusations of fraud from the losing party, led by Mexico City Mayor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

"We hope that this will resonate with Americans concerned with election issues and with Mexicans concerned with issues in their country," said Maya co-chairman/CEO Moctesuma Esparza, citing parallels with the U.S. elections of 2000 in which George W. Bush's win was decided by the Supreme Court.

"I am hoping that the documentary will motivate people to vote" in the U.S. elections in November, said Mandoki, who shuttles between homes in Mexico and Los Angeles. "It makes you realize how fragile democracy is."

Decine released the docu in November in Mexico, where it earned $1.5 million to become the country's second highest grossing docu after Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" ($2 million).
