Departure comes as speculation continues that former KCBS/KCAL prexy-g.m. Don Corsini may be in line to head up the Tribune-owned Los Angeles outlet (Daily Variety, Aug. 20).
Vitanovec already left KTLA earlier this month, having returned to Chicago on Aug. 12. Since then, John Moczulski, the station's VP marketing and programming, has been running the station on an interim basis.
Vitanovec had been temporarily overseeing KTLA since February, when former g.m. Vinnie Malcolm was let go.
He had also served as exec VP of Tribune Broadcasting since November 2005. Vitanovec's departure comes as new Tribune Broadcasting chief Ed Wilson (and the Sam Zell-led Tribune management team) continue to make changes at the company.
"With the transition to the new Tribune Broadcasting Company management group well under way, I have decided the time is right to leave Tribune," Vitanovec wrote in a letter to colleagues. "I leave knowing that you'll support Ed and the new management team just as you have done for me."
Before focusing his attention on KTLA, Vitanovec oversaw Tribune's 12 Eastern stations, as well as WGN Superstation and WGN-AM. Before that, he was VP-general manager of flagship Chicago outlet WGN.
Vitanovec began his nearly 25-year run at Tribune in 1984 as manager of financial planning for Tribune Broadcasting.
