TV pioneer Geoff Theobald dies

Directed 'Let's Make a Deal,' 'Pitfall'

British Columbia television pioneer Geoff Theobald died Aug. 21 in North Vancouver, Canada following a lengthy illness. He was 74.

Born in Chilliwack, B.C., his career as a television director began in 1963 with the BCTV game show "Windfall," which ran for seven years. That was followed by "Mantrap," hosted by Alan Hamel and featuring Suzanne Somers, Meredith MacRae and Margot Kidder, and "Celebrity Review," a daily show filmed at the Cave Supper Club.

In 1980 and '81 he directed the top-rated show "Let's Make a Deal." That was followed by "Pitfall," a quiz show hosted by Alex Trebek and taped in the Burnaby studios of BCTV. Theobald was involved in the creation of "Pitfall" with long-time colleague, producer John Barton. His final gig came as director of "Lingo," a game show based on language.

He was also a partner in Adams and Theobald Advertising Agency in Vancouver, and directed radio and TV commercials.

He is survived by a daughter and a son.
