Born in Dallas, he studied at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York. His cousin Robert Redford got him interested in acting, and helped him get his Screen Actors Guild Card with a part in "All the Presidents' Men."
Among the other shows he appeared in were "Airwolf," "Transformers," "Battlestar Galactica," "Tales of the Gold Monkey," "The Greatest American Hero" and "Baa Baa Black Sheep."
He also performed in more than 100 plays.
MacKay is survived by his father and two brothers.
