Morelia hits on growth spurt

Film festival up 10% from last year

MEXICO CITY -- The sixth Morelia Film Festival, Mexico's showcase for new and emerging filmmakers, is growing in scale with 85 pics in competition, up 10% on 2007.

Festival organizers said Monday that the event, which runs Oct. 4-12, would see the number of documentaries alone jump from 16 in 2007 to 26 in 2008.

Also for the first time, the short film competition winner (fiction and animation) will be eligible for Oscar consideration, as is already the case with Latin American fests Cartagena (Colombia) and Rio (Brazil). Fest's previous shorts winner, Elisa Miller, whose 2006 short "Watching It Rain" also took the Palme d'Or in Cannes in the category, will compete with "Roma."
