BMI tops in performance revenues

Music rights org earned more than $901 million

BMI has become the first copyright organization to top $900 million in annual music performance revenues, besting last year's mark by 7.2%.

The U.S. music performing rights org earned revs of more than $901 million in the fiscal year ended June 30. Of the total revenue, $786 million will be distributed to the songwriters, composers and copyright owners. Distribution represents an 8% increase over the prior fiscal year.

BMI has more than 375,000 songwriters, composers and music publisher affiliates and represents about 6.5 million works.

BMI generated $664 million in domestic licensing income, up 8% over 2007. Cable, satellite radio and satellite television brought in revenues of more than $208 million, accounting for more than 23% of the company's consolidated revenue. Traditional broadcast radio and television accounted for $340 million, or about 38% of revenue.

Revenues from the performance of music in retail and restaurants, bars and the hospitality industry increased to $97 million. BMI's new-media revenues increased to $15 million. International revenues were also a bright spot, accounting for $238 million.
