'Vanities' sets February date

Musical to move to Broadway

“Vanities,” the new musical about three decades of friendship among a trio of Texas gals, has set a February start date for performances on Broadway, following its current tryout run at the Pasadena Playhouse.

Previously talked about for the fall, the show moves to a less-crowded period for Rialto bows, beginning previews Feb. 2 at a Shubert theater to be announced. Official opening will be set for later that month.

Based on Jack Heifner’s Off Broadway comedy of the same name, “Vanities” has a book by Heifner and music and lyrics by David Kirshenbaum. Judith Ivey will direct, with musical staging by Dan Knechtges. Lauren Kennedy, Sarah Stiles and Anneliese van der Pol play the friends whose lives and loves are tracked from the turbulent 1960s through the late ’80s.

The Pasadena run began previews Friday and will play through Sept. 28, with opening night set for Aug. 29. Producers on Broadway are Junkyard Dog Prods. and Bartner/Jenkins Entertainment, in association with Demos Bizar Entertainment.
