NHK said in a statement, "We will take this case as a lesson for our future news-gathering and reporting."
According to the complaint, the clinic had given nurses access to patient records that were supposedly for doctors and obstetric nurses only, but stopped the practice in October 2003.
NHK's Nagoya station reported on Jan. 25, 2005 that the illegal practice was still continuing, resulting in a sharp drop in patients and a loss of 40 million yen ($36.6 million) in reported income for the year.
The head of the clinic sued NHK for $50.3 million in damages, claiming the incorrect report had injured its reputation. On Aug. 22 Tokyo District Court announced a $3.6 million settlement in the case.
