To coincide with the eighth World Soundtrack Awards, held in the city Oct. 18, the focus at this year's Ghent Film Festival will be on film music, with five concerts scheduled to take place across the festival -- including the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra playing a program dedicated to the works of John Williams. Gabriel Yared, Clint Mansell and Angelo Badalamenti also score tribute nights, plus there's a retrospective on silent legend Harold Lloyd, with accompanying exhibition.

This year's Viennale dedicates a large chunk of its running time to Los Angeles, via a program curated by filmmaker Thom Andersen ("Los Angeles Plays Itself") featuring about 50 films showcasing the City of Angels. In addition, there's a spotlight on "Bob Dylan and the Cinema" -- on films in which he's appeared and on works he's influenced -- and a sidebar dedicated to documentarist John Gianvito ("Profit Motive & the Whispering Wind").
MOLODIST

Ukraine's annual festival for young filmmakers, Kiev's Molodist marks its 38th edition in October with a new co-production event aimed at directors and producers from Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus.
The Molodist Film Boat Meeting -- which takes places onboard a floating hotel on the river Dnieper -- is designed to encourage the production of films from or about the region.
FILM FESTIVAL COTTBUS

Cottbus specializes in East European cinema, and each year artistic director Roland Rust selects a country or region on which to focus; for the 2008 edition, he's chosen "New Cinema from the Baltics." The main retrospective has been curated around the theme of "1968: the Prague Spring and its Aftermath"; while its two-day Connecting Cottbus co-production market remains one of the key fixtures in the East European calendar.
TURIN FILM FESTIVAL

For its 26th edition -- the second under the directorship of filmmaker Nanni Moretti -- Turin has announced a full slate: retrospectives dedicated to Roman Polanski and Jean-Pierre Melville, and a spotlight on the "British Renaissance" of the 1980s, notable for concentrating on both cinema releases (with titles ranging from Stephen Frears' "My Beautiful Laundrette" to Julien Temple's "The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle") and television drama (works by Ken Loach and Dennis Potter).
TALLINN

Stretching over weeks when short winter days are an ideal incentive to retreat into a cinema, Estonia's Black Nights fest combines a competitive feature event with sidebars devoted to animation, student, youth and children's films. It also sports a co-production market, Baltic Event, which is open to projects from the Baltic countries, Central and Eastern Europe, Russia and Scandinavia. The event offers one-on-one meetings between producers and financiers.
