Hayao Miyazaki's toon 'Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea' has passed the Yen 10 billion ($93.2 million) mark at the Japanese box office.

Hayao Miyazaki's toon "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea" has passed the Yen 10 billion ($93.2 million) mark at the Japanese box office, the first local pic to pass this milestone since Miyazaki's 2004 "Howl's Moving Castle."

"Ponyo" accomplished the feat on Aug. 18 after 31 days in release. "Moving Castle" required 33 days to reach it.

They were both surpassed by Miyazaki's 2001 smash "Spirited Away," which crossed the same barrier in just 25 days and went on to earn $280 million -- the all-time high for any pic released in Japan.
