Prepared by Cinematheque Ontario senior programmer James Quandt, the 26-film "In the Realm of Oshima: The Films of Japanese Master Nagisa Oshima" includes all his fiction features -- the best known being 1976's "In the Realm of the Senses" and 1983's "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence"-- and late documentaries, many of which were previously unavailable to exhibit.
Cinematheque Ontario, a division of the Toronto Intl. Film Festival Group, will tour the retrospective Oct. 31-Dec. 6 in North America, hitting the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, Minn.), Pacific Cinematheque (Vancouver, B.C.), Harvard Film Archive (Cambridge, Mass.), Northwest Film Center (Seattle), Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley, Calif.), the National Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), George Eastman House (Rochester, N.Y.) among others.
