In ankling the tenpercentery after 15 years, Sher called the gig "an opportunity I couldn't refuse" and said the parting was "amicable."
"We're at a moment in time in Ryan's life and in the development of the company that there's real opportunity for massive growth," Sher said.
Sher said he'll continue with William Morris over the next few weeks to help transition his clients to other reps. Seacrest is also expected to remain stationed at William Morris, with worldwide head of nonscripted TV John Ferriter and chairman-CEO Jim Wiatt handling his career.
"It got to the point where Ryan realized that to really (oversee it), with the way his schedule is, he needed someone there who was fulltime day to day," Ferriter said.
Seacrest hosts "American Idol," his morning KIIS-FM show, "New Years' Rockin' Eve," "American Top 40" and "E! News," but his empire also includes a production pact with E! and a syndication deal with Clear Channel that includes a sales component and a growing stable of series, including NBC's upcoming "Momma's Boys."
Ryan Seacrest Prods. chief financial officer Jeff Refold remains at the company, as does production/development exec VP Eliot Goldberg. Sher will report to Seacrest and oversee all divisions.
"His new wakeup call is 4 a.m.," Seacrest said.
