Journalist Chris Rubin dies at 49

Writer recently worked for Gayot publications

Journalist Chris Rubin, who wrote for Variety and other publications about music, food, wine and travel, died Friday in Los Angeles of complications of cancer. He was 49.

Rubin had received a liver transplant in June 2006 after a diagnosis of a rare vascular cancer, epitheliod hemangioendothelioma. He wrote movingly of his diagnosis and his subsequent marriage in an article for the Los Angeles Times opinion section.

Born in Los Angeles, Rubin was a student at three UC campuses -- Berkeley, Los Angeles, and Santa Cruz. He worked briefly in the film industry, writing screenplays and attending AFI's writing program. In the late 1980s, he began writing about music, travel and food. His music writing appeared in Rolling Stone and LA Weekly. For Daily Variety, he compiled several restaurant guides and wrote for VWeekend on subjects including coffee and spirits. Most recently he served as LA editor for Gayot publications. Among the other publications he wrote for were Travel & Leisure, the Robb Report, the Los Feliz Ledger and the Los Angeles Times.

He is survived by wife, Deborah Calla, a film writer-producer; father Stanley, a film writer-producer; mother Kathleen Hughes Rubin, an actress; sister Angie, a music editor; brother John, a documentary filmmaker and brother Michael.
