The British helmer, best known for such corset-heavy fare as "Shakespeare in Love" and "Mrs. Brown," has signed on to direct the indie dramedy "Sex and Sylvia Plath," which centers on a death-obsessed 16-year-old who loses her virginity to a teenager, only to discover that her mother is also having an affair with him.
WAM Films, the U.S. production arm of Alain Chabat’s France-based Chez Wam, is producing the film.
The helmer, whose most recent bigscreen effort was 2005’s Gwyneth Paltrow starrer "Proof," averages a project about every three years, making his attachment to "Sex and Sylvia Plath" all the more significant.
Jennifer O’Kieffe penned "Sex and Sylvia Plath" when she was a grad student at UCLA. Daily Variety editor-in-chief Peter Bart was one of the three judges that tapped the screenplay for last year’s Samuel Goldwyn Award. Script also made last year’s Black List, an annual compilation of the hottest unproduced screenplays.
WAM’s credits include DreamWorks’ Eddie Murphy starrer "A Thousand Words," which is in post-production.
