Nalluri's 'Tourist' courts Cruise

The film has emerged as the strongest contender for Cruise's next outing and his first star vehicle since the Bryan Singer-directed "Valkyrie" at United Artists.
Scripted by "Gosford Park" scribe Julian Fellowes, the thriller concerns an American tourist who finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.
Spyglass principals Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman will produce with Canal Plus.
Nalluri, who directed the HBO film "Tsunami: The Aftermath" and "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day," joined the project several months ago (Daily Variety, June 5).
The courtship between Cruise and Spyglass has grown more ardent over the past two weeks and comes as he makes a scene-stealing turn in "Tropic Thunder."
Cruise has been careful in weighing his next film, and sources caution that his participation in "The Tourist" hasn't solidified. Cruise had been courted but decided in the end not to star in "Edwin A. Salt," a drama whose lead role is being redrafted for Angelina Jolie.
