A 25,000-square-foot annex will be located at 76 Mercer St. in SoHo and showcase selected artifacts from the Cleveland museum’s collection. The annex is part of the museum’s mission to honor cities that have helped shape the history of rock ’n’ roll.
Among the items that will be on display at the Gotham outpost are an untitled, handwritten poem by Jim Morrison; Elvis Presley’s motorcycle jacket; Michael Jackson’s velvet jacket from “We Are the World”; John Lennon’s Record Plant piano; and Bruce Springsteen’s 1957 Chevy.
Areas in the annex will be devoted to the artists inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; a movie theater; roots and influences; “moments to movements”; and “New York Rocks.”
Museum officials are looking to the branch to provide fresh revenue streams, attract more philanthropy dollars and entice more people to visit the main hall in Cleveland.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the annex Wednesday.
The New York annex will be open for a minimum of two years and is being financed by Running Subway Prods., the company behind “Bodies … The Exhibition” and the Broadway production of “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas version will be less focused on rock artifacts and more entertainment oriented.
