Thesp, who has appeared on Broadway in "A Catered Affair," "Grey Gardens" and "Urban Cowboy," has been offered the lead role of Tony in the upcoming Rialto revival of "West Side Story."
The idea had been floated that actors portraying the landmark tuner's rival gang members would be drawn from a pool of younger-than-usual thesps. However, the potential casting of Cavenaugh, 30, seems to represent a change of direction.
Producers declined to comment on any casting developments.
New production, helmed by librettist Arthur Laurents ("Gypsy"), will for the first time incorporate Spanish into the book and score by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim. Large-scale staging will have a cast of 37 and an orchestra of 30.
Produced by Kevin McCollum, James L. Nederlander and Jeffrey Seller, "West Side Story" will play D.C.'s National Theater this winter ahead of a Broadway run, planned to open in March at a Nederlander theater to be determined.
