On Saturday a police motorcyclist was killed while escorting a VIP away from the Beas River equestrian venue. He is believed to have collided with concrete pilings and hit a pole.
Hours before the Opening Ceremony, mid-afternoon Friday, Hong Kong endured a bomb scare. Explosives experts blew up a suspicious object at a subway station close to one of two outdoor venues where huge TV screens have been erected for public viewing of the Games. Police later described six inch cylinder with wires hanging out as a "low-grade pyrotechnic device," and a "hoax made from a marine flare."
The same day a protester caused massive traffic disruption when he climbed a major road bridge and unveiled two banners calling for better human rights in China and freedom for Tibet. Matt Pearce, who has created similar stunts for different causes, was brought down from the Tsing Ma bridge after three hours.
