The Green Train tour will cover 28 states beginning in Portland, Ore., and finishing in Washington, D.C. Musical performances will take place in nine large venues and 21 smaller acoustic venues in whistle stops. As part of the Green Train experience, nonprofit and educational organizations will run booths demonstrating sustainable products and ways to live green.
The Dave Matthews Band, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Cher and Jewel have all pledged support, although no other performers have been booked as yet. More acts from a wide selection of musical genres will be added as the tour dates approach, along with actors, artists and writers.
Bob Wolf, the main force behind the "We Are the World" radio simulcast, is organizing the Green Train effort with Haggard. The train, which will have more than 20 cars, will be powered by both biodiesel fuel and solar energy. The main stage will be powered by solar, wind and biodiesel fuel.
"The Hag and I came up with an old-fashioned way to deliver a new and simple message: a world's fair-themed train carrying exhibits and simple solutions to living green in a modern world," Wolf said.
The Green Train has set up its headquarters in Nashville and created a website, Greentrainglobal.org.
