Playwright Tracy Letts, who penned the legit original, is on board to write the screenplay adaptation of the sprawling family epic.
"August" follows one volatile Oklahoma family in the aftermath of its patriarch's unexplained disappearance. Clocking in at more than three hours, the play began to attract buzz during its preem at the Steppenwolf Theater last summer.
After it transferred to the Rialto in the fall, the Steppenwolf production went on to become the standout straight play of the Broadway season, picking up five Tonys and a Pulitzer.
Doumanian ("All the Real Girls," "Bullets Over Broadway") and Traxler, prexy of Chicago-based producing and presenting org Jam Theatricals, are both among the lead producers of the Broadway incarnation of "August," as are Jeffrey Richards and Jerry Frankel, who will exec produce the pic.
With work on the screenplay just commencing, no budget or sked for the film has yet been set.
Casting has not yet been discussed. "So many actors and stars have come to see it on Broadway, and we've gotten inquiries," Doumanian said. "People are enthusiastic about the film version."
A U.K. staging of "August," directed by Steppenwolf helmer Anna D. Shapiro and likely to star many of the original cast members, will play an eight-week run at London's National Theater beginning in November. A Stateside national tour is on track to launch next summer.
