ABC not moderating debates

CBS, NBC, and PBS to handle Oct. events

ABC News is conspicuously absent from the lineup of moderators for the upcoming presidential and vice presidential debates, announced Tuesday by the nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates.

PBS personnel snagged two slots, with "The News Hour's" Jim Lehrer named to oversee the first presidential debate at the U. of Mississippi in Oxford on Sept. 26. "Washington Week's" Gwen Ifill will sit in on the vice presidential faceoff on Oct. 2 at St. Louis' Washington U.

NBC's Tom Brokaw and CBS' Bob Schieffer will moderate the final two presidential debates, on Oct. 7 at Belmont U. in Nashville, and Oct. 15 at Long Island's Hofstra U.

Politicos and numerous media mavens were highly critical of the Alphabet's coverage of the April 16 Democratic primary debate in Philadelphia between Barack Obama and then-contender Hillary Clinton. ABC News anchor Charles Gibson and "This Week" host George Stephanopoulos were taken to task for dwelling on what were termed tangential issues, such as Obama's non-wearing of a flag pin on his lapel and his affiliation with the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, at the expense of more pressing topics.

CPD did not respond to a call seeking comment on the selection of moderators. An ABC News spokeswoman acknowledged that the network was "disappointed," but otherwise the net chose to accentuate the positive.

"All of the moderators they have chosen are well qualified, and we look forward to bringing the debates to the American public," the spokeswoman said.
