French digital TV hits 56% penetration

DTT most popular for digital viewers

PARIS — Fifty-six percent of French households now receive digital television via DTT, DTH IPTV or cable, an increase of 4.3% in only three months.

A quarterly joint study by French research firm NPA Conseil and the broadcasting infrastructure group TDF also found that 31.5% of all French homes were totally dependent on digital reception as of the end of July – a rise of 1.7% in the past three months.

DTT is by far the most popular reception mode for digital viewers, with 42% watching terrestrially. This represents a 3.8% increase over three months, and 15.4% over the past year.

As of the end of July, 82.2% of the French mainland could receive DTT transmissions.

Presently, 23.2% of French homes have at least one HD television, a growth of 8.2% in the past year. Four French networks are due to begin HD DTT broadcasts by the end of October.

Private networks TF1 and M6 have formally committed to airing at least 80% of their shows in HD by the end of 2012.

However, the study found that 66.1% of respondents were unaware that many analog broadcasts would soon be stopping, and what consequences this would have on their reception abilities.
