With more consumers turning to their cell phones and other, similar devices to be entertained, mobile data revenue will grow by a compound annual average of 16% over the next decade, according to a report from research firm SNL Kagan.

Firm said the $24 billion in mobile data revs collected in 2007 will shoot up to more than $100 billion by 2017.

SNL Kagan attributes the increase to the introduction of devices like Apple�s iPhone and other smart-phone devices, which can access the Internet at faster speeds.

Research group is also predicting a growth in the number of people who will be subscribing to the high-speed services that enable their phones to download data.

Such subs are expected to grow by 5.8% each year, adding up to nearly 250 million by 2017, making up 77% of all wireless subscribers.

Most users will continue to receive and send messages from their phones or check email, with SNL Kagan predicting that 62% of users will be focused on such activities by 2017.

The good news for studios and TV networks is that viewings of mobile video and TV will grow at a compound annual growth rate of nearly 23%, downloads of games nearly 13% and music another 13% during the 10-year period.

Between 2010 and 2012, mobile video and TV usage on phones will get an extra boost as phones compatible with the ATSC-MH mobile broadcast TV standard hit the market. Gaming will increasingly infiltrate the mobile phone sector as younger users age, SNL Kagan said.
