NeoClassics picks up 'Black Balloon'

Company nabs North American rights to comedy

NeoClassics Films has acquired North American rights to Australian coming-of-age comedy "The Black Balloon" from Icon Entertainment Intl. for mid-six figures.

Pic's directed by first-time helmer Elissa Down and stars Rhys Wakefield, Luke Ford, Gemma Ward and Toni Collette.

Tristram Miall ("Strictly Ballroom") is the producer.

"The Black Balloon" has grossed more than $2 million at the Australian box office. NeoClassics plans to open the pic in key U.S. cities in October.

NeoClassics' first U.S. release, Slamdance award winner "Surviving Crooked Lake," is set for theatrical release in September.
