Leasing will begin on the seven 50- to 55-minute episodes in Rio on Sept. 10 and will last for 14 weeks.
HBO, which plans to air the second season simultaneously across Latin America in 2009, will invest 8.8 million reals ($5.6 million) in the skein through a local tax shelter. The first season, which had six episodes, was funded the same way.
Helmer Cao Hamburger ("The Year My Parents Went on Vacation") will return as general director overseeing the project and will direct three or four episodes himself, said O2 Filmes exec partner Andrea Barata Ribeiro. Luciano Moura and Fabrizia Pinto will direct the remaining episodes.
Hamburger again teams with Elena Soarez to pen the skein.
"After the success that we had all over Latin America (in 2006), we thought that there was an opportunity to continue," said Luis Peraza, exec VP of HBO Latin America. "Dramatically speaking, we believe the second season will be even better than the first."
The plot centers on a mob family that controls an illegal gambling operation and samba association in Rio.
Most of the first season cast will reprise their roles. Rodrigo dos Santos, Enrique Diaz and Thogun will again play the three sons struggling for control of the family. However, Jece Valadao, who played the head of the family, died in November 2006.
