Charlotte Huggins

Women's Impact Report: The Producers

If there's a 3-D revolution under way, then Charlotte Huggins just might be its George Washington.

Huggins has been pioneering stereoscopic 3-D since 1994 when she produced the short "Honey, I Shrunk the Audience" and has produced 3-D movies for theme parks, Imax and now the feature films "Journey to the Center of the Earth," the first live-action digital 3-D feature, and "Fly Me to the Moon," the first animated film produced in 3-D from start to finish.

She is now so experienced in the format that she can evaluate 3-D footage without glasses.

The energetic Huggins' career includes a stint as a PR writer, a producer of commercials (remember John Cleese for Magnavox?) and a writer on "Hunter." There she teamed up to write with Tom Huggins, son of the skein's legendary producer, Roy Huggins, and her future husband.

She rarely encounters other women working in the 3-D arena, but sexism has not been the major issue for her.

"(The challenge) is: How bad do you want it?" she says. "You have to stay so focused on what you want, and if you take your eye off of it for a split second, the likelihood is you won't get it." Balancing work and family, she says, has been a daily struggle.

She is now working on a documentary to film in China, "Flight of the Dragon." In the future, she hopes to broaden acceptance of 3-D as a filmmaking tool.

"Right now, 3-D is more of a kids' market," she says. "And it's been a good kids' market. Now what I'd like to do really is like a 3-D thriller." She wants to encourage quality "movies in 3-D" as opposed to gimmicky "3-D movies."

"It's fun to watch people watch

3-D movies. I go to the theater, sit in the bottom corner seat, no glasses, and watch people watch the movie. I will watch them watch it five or six times in a row. "

Role model: Kathleen Kennedy.

What I'm reading now: "Plato's 'Timaeus' and 'Critias.' It has the first written account of Atlantis. I'm getting ready for the sequel (to 'Journey')."

If not Hillary, then who? "I'm not answering that. ... That is a sexist question."

Most important issue facing Americans in this election year: "I think we need to mend our relationships with the rest of the world."

Fave leisure activity: "Running. I like the endorphins."
