The scathing but entertaining attack on religious fundamentalism, in the form of a biopic of liberal 12th century Muslim philosopher Averroes, will unspool Aug. 7 at the 7,000-seat Piazza Grande.
Locarno artistic topper Frederic Maire. praised Chahine as an "extraordinary storyteller, who ranged across film genres so brilliantly and commanded admiration also for the courage of the positions he took, insisting on the importance of tolerance."
Chahine, who died Sunday in Cairo at age 82 after a nearly five-decade career, was celebrated by Locarno with a complete retrospective in 1996, with the helmer in attendance.
Locarno's 61st edition runs Aug. 6-16.
