Miramax's "Brideshead Revisited" nabbed a per screen average of $10,061 as it opened to an estimated $332,000 from 33 theaters in top markets, according to Rentrak.
Film, based on the classic Evelyn Waugh novel, provided the perfect counterprogramming for adults weary of more commercial summer pics, according to Miramax. Directed by Julian Jarrold and toplining Emma Thompson, "Brideshead" expands into 160 theaters on Friday.
Magnolia's docu "Man on Wire," chronicling Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the World Trade Center's Twin Towers, opened in two theaters in Gotham, grossing an estimated $48,500 for a per location average of $24,250.
Paramount Vantage's docu "American Teen," the toast of the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, couldn't rally the sort of biz that "Brideshead" and "Man on Wire" enjoyed. Film grossed $42,827 from five theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a per location average of $8,565.
The Weinstein Co.'s British drama "Boy A" also was muted in its opening, grossing an estimated $11,405 from two theaters in L.A. for a per screen average of $5,703 and cume of $13,127. Pic opened on Wednesday.
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert docu "CSNY: Deja Vu," distributed by Roadside Attractions, grossed $38,800 as it opened in 24 theaters for a per screen average of $1,617.
Among holdovers, French thriller "Tell No One" continued to do good biz, grossing an estimated $429,673 from 77 theaters for a per screen average of $5,580 and a cume of $1.7 million in its fourth frame. Film placed No. 16 overall at the domestic box office.
