"Call of Duty" developer Infinity Ward probably could have done quite nicely sticking to the existing formula for the latest installment in its signature World War II shooter franchise.

But studio co-founders Grant Collier, Jason West and Vince Zampella took a risk, moving the series into contemporary times with "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare," which sold more than 10 million units, making it the best selling action title and one the biggest games worldwide in the past year.

Collier is now working on special projects for Infinity Ward's parent publisher Activision Blizzard, while West and Zampella have renewed their contracts and are believed to be overseeing a new "Call of Duty" installment for 2009, as well as an original videogame property.
