Sony to handle 'Synecdoche'

Studio nabs Charlie Kaufman's directing debut

Sony Classics will handle the U.S. release of Charlie Kaufman’s directing debut “Synecdoche, New York,” the company confirmed Thursday.

UTA brokered the sale of the Sidney Kimmel-produced pic, which preemed in competition in Cannes.

The effects-heavy film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a theater director in upstate New York who finds himself the centerpiece of a vintage Kaufman fantasy. Catherine Keener and Samantha Morton also star.

Kaufman wrote and directed. Anthony Bregman was also a producer.

An October release is planned. Sony Classics co-toppers Michael Barker and Tom Bernard said in a statement that they had avidly pursued the film since Kaufman described it to them over dinner two years ago.
