Broadway hit with heatwave

Box office saw sales increase

'In the Heights'

Tony winner 'In the Heights' broke into the millionaires' club for the first time last week.

As Gotham temperatures heated up last week, so did Rialto box office.

Most Broadway shows saw sales increase, with six productions perched in the millionaire's club -- including, for the first time, "In the Heights" ($1,006,911), which has been steadily on the rise since it picked up four Tonys last month.

Also among moving up was "Mamma Mia!" ($1,007,600), picking up steam as the movie version pulled in counterprogramming coin at the cineplexes over the weekend. With "Heights," "Mamma" joined regular millionaires like "Wicked" ($1,522,706) and "The Lion King" ($1,321,116) at the head of the class.

Largest gain was posted by the final week of "Passing Strange" ($393,296), which more than doubled its tally over the prior sesh, while "Mary Poppins" ($978,867), up $130,000, also did well.

"Legally Blonde" ($855,990) topped $850,000, propelled in part by the reality casting skein that just wrapped on MTV. Last week saw the final appearance of original star Laura Bell Bundy, while today the replacement thesp, announced on the TV show Monday night, steps into the lead.

For the week ending July 20, total Rialto cume rose around $875,000 to $19.3 million for 29 shows reporting.

Only dips of the frame were seen at "Thurgood" ($242,497), down about 10% and playing to 62% capacity auds, and, slipping slightly thanks in part to last week's press comps and opening night, "[title of show]" ($154,120).

"[title]" played to houses at 48% of capacity. Now that reviews -- a mixed bag, with several positive -- have hit, it remains to be seen whether the show will gain word-of-mouth momentum over the next several weeks.
