"Pass the Sugar," which marks Cates' sixth helming outing, is being financed by Aussie production company Stack Exchange.
Cates' most recent dramatic feature, "Deal," was released by MGM. "Sugar" focuses on the nine players who made the 2005 World Series of Poker final table and the eventual winner, Australian "Diamond" Joe Hachem, who captured the largest prize ever awarded in a single poker tournament at the time.
"Sugar" also will feature interviews with Jennifer Tilly, Jose Canseco and other celeb cardplayers.
Tony Hachem and Caitlin Murney are producing.
Cates and Murney previously teamed on "The Chaos Theory," a psychological thriller starring Milo Ventimiglia.
