Australian stations urge digital switch

Nation set to switch off analog in 2011

After lagging badly behind both government aims and paybox Foxtel, the Aussie free-to-air stations have launched a consortium to encourage viewers to switch to digital broadcasting.

Australia, which has changed the deadline several times because of poor take-up, is set to switch off its analog signal in 2011.

Pubcasters the ABC and SBS, the Seven Network, the Nine Network, Network Ten and regional webs Prime, WIN and Southern Cross are partnering on Freeview. The ABC’s TV topper, Kim Dalton, will head the org.
