De la Iglesia’s thriller "The Oxford Murders" has become Spain's biggest local release this year, grabbing Euros 8.2 million ($12.9 million).
Set in the year 2530, the sci-fi skein narrates the adventures of a group of marines, who cross space searching for a inhabitable planet because the Earth is covered by buildings.
"This is a crazy comedy with quite wild humor," De la Iglesia said.
"Pluton" will show influences from cult TV comedies, such as Ben Elton's "Young Ones" and "Soap."
Produced by De la Iglesia's banner Panico Films and Pedro Costa PC, shooting on the 26 35-minute episodes began June 16. Launch is skedded for September.
To write the scripts, De la Iglesia has teamed with his longtime co-scribe Jorge Guerricaechevarria and the writers of the successful Spanish adaptation of French short-format "Camera Cafe."
"Pluton" marks De la Iglesia's latest incursion into TV production after shooting "La habitacion del nino" (The Child's Room) for Spanish mini-studio Filmax and horror film series "Films That Won't Let You Sleep." For broadcaster Telecinco.
