Peter Caranicas joins Variety staff

He will help direct the production of Variety's annual slate of some 250 editorial features, which are branded under the moniker VPlus. These sections appear in both daily and weekly Variety, on Variety.com and in electronic newsletters and other custom-publishing ventures. VPlus features include awards season reports, film festival and market updates, as well as the high-profile "Ten to Watch," "Billion Dollar" and "Impact" reports.

"His experience in covering film and TV production and the global TV arena provides Variety with an internationally respected journalist who has a vast list of contacts inside these key business sectors."
As editor of the film/TV crafts-and-technology pub Below the Line, Caranicas directed editorial operations. Before that, he was editor and publisher of Film & Video magazine and development director at its tradeshow affiliate, ShowBiz Expo. He also served in top editorial posts at Shoot, Videography and Millimeter and has reported on the TV industry for TV Newsday, NATPE Daily, World Screen News and the New York Times Encyclopedia of Television.
Caranicas will report to Gaydos and will work closely alongside features managing editor Carole Horst.
