Producer Charles H. Joffe dies at 78

Won best picture Oscar for 'Annie Hall'

Charles H. Joffe, who produced many of Woody Allen's films beginning with 1969's "Take the Money and Run" and including his Cannes entry this year, "Vicki Cristina Barcelona," died Wednesday at Cedars-Sinai following a long illness.

He won a best pic Oscar as producer of Allen's 1977 "Annie Hall."

Known around town as Charlie, he and partner Jack Rollins specialized in comedy management, working with Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and Allen.

Born July 16, 1929, in Brooklyn, Joffe studied journalism at Syracuse U., where he entered talent management booking bands. He then worked for MCA.

In 1953 he hooked up with Rollins and they formed a partnership repping up-and-coming comics in their Gotham agency.

The pair also ran Jack Rollins and Charles Joffe Productions from 1969-1993, producing telepics for Showtime and PBS.

They eventually went their separate ways: Rollins to produce for David Letterman, while Joffe continued to produce Allen's movies.

Survivors include Joffe's wife, Carol; son, Cory; daughter, Suzanne; stepdaughter, helmer Nicole Holofcener; a stepmother; and three grandchildren.
