Film festival offers opportunities to first-timers

"We will search for young talents from other influential film festivals and famous film institutes around the world," said Shen Yang of the SIFF organizers.
The database also will serve as a platform for young filmmakers to exchange ideas, and work will be shown on China Central Television's movie channel and at local film schools.
"The most promising ones will also be recommended for the Asian New Talent Award and are likely to receive funds for shooting from local producers," Shen said.
Winners of the Intl. Student Shorts Award at this year's 11th SIFF will be added to the database. They include young Mexican director Federico Schmucler, whose short "Reality Show" won the top prize; and Israeli student filmmaker Yishai Orian, who took the director prize for "Happy Birthday Yemima."
The Shanghai Expo in 2010 is the next big event to come to China after the Olympic Games in August. Expo organizers said they would offer cash prizes for the Intl. Student Shorts Award in the future, and some filmmakers may be chosen to produce short public-interest ads for the Shanghai World Expo.
