Maybe the heat has been getting to them. This summer, two "Saturday Night Live" alumni, Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, seem to have suffered mini-meltdowns.

Myers' "The Love Guru" opened to $13.9 million and has grossed a mere $30.5 million to date. Whatever mojo Myers has, it didn't help him with "Guru."

Some published reports (notably a profile in Entertainment Weekly) said Myers was impossible to work with and that even folks involved in the film were secretly pleased that auds rejected him.

As for Murphy, his "Meet Dave" debuted July 11, and New Regency and 20th Century Fox were bracing for a rough opening, based on tracking.

Murphy didn't make any friends on the Fox lot, particularly when he was a no-show at the "Meet Dave" premiere in Westwood last week. Adding insult to injury, it was Murphy who asked for a preem in the first place.

Some were not amused that Murphy, in pre-release interviews, talked about his desire to retire from the screen, to do plays.

(It should be noted that the DreamWorks Animation team seemed to have figured out a formula for working with Myers and Murphy last summer with their voice work on "Shrek the Third.")

While other "SNL" alums are having a tough summer, Adam Sandler seems to be staying on course. While Sandler doesn't like premieres either, or doing certain kinds of press, he lets it be known from the outset. He also works with the same crew again and again.

Sandler's "You Don't Mess With the Zohan" may not be his highest-grossing, but it's done fine. "Zohan," from Sony, opened to $38.5 million on June 6 and has cumed $95.6 million domestically.

Maybe he whose laugh lasts, laughs loudest.
