Lee, working with cinematographer Matthew Libatique (``Iron Man''), will shoot two perfs of ``Strange'' before an audience, both on July 19. He'll also film two runs of the show sans crowd.
Steve Klein, a co-producer of ``Strange'' who is producing the movie with Lee, estimated the budget for the pic to be around $2 million. Lee's 40 Acres and a Mule is the production company for the shoot.
How auds will see the filmed version has not yet been nailed down, with producers looking into both cable broadcast and theatrical release as options.
New musical ``Strange'' earned strong reviews when it opened on Broadway in February but has since had trouble attracting crowds, with weekly box office dropping last week to around $175,000. The Lee film could potentially boost the musical's profile, if producers can release the pic while the tuner is still playing.
